1999 One Dollar Obverses

Three distinct sized obverses were used for the new Ian Rank-Broadley design. The medium sized obverse accounts for most of the mintage. The small obverse is uncommon but can be found in high grade (and in mint sets). The large is scarce, and rare in high grade. The lettering on the large obverse almost runs into the rim.

The results of measuring each obverse are given below. All measurements are accurate to about +/- 0.04 mm. The Base Letter Distance is the distance from the base of the letters on one side of the obverse to that on the opposite side. As expected the effigy of the Small Obverse dollar is considerably smaller than that of the other two but it is interesting that the only difference between the large and medium obverses is the apparent size of the letters.
